Artists fuel innovation and problem-solving by bringing fresh perspectives, influencing the industry, and fostering innovation across sectors like technology, healthcare, and sustainability. In response to the pandemic, the shift to digital made society rethink and prioritize accessibility during the pandemic because the sector faced many challenges with in-person events. As a result, arts organizations promptly shifted their programming online, allowing the public to engage with the arts from wherever they may be. This is merely scratching the surface of a much deeper and broader impact. The creative economy holds tremendous potential to bring positive change to society, which is why it’s important to advocate for and invest in it, ensuring that we can all enjoy the benefits the creative economy offers.

The creative economy is not just about creative expression and cultural enrichment. It plays a critical role in making the places we live enjoyable, with the power to enhance our quality of life, drive social change, foster innovation, and contribute to society’s overall well-being.

The following are main reasons to welcome and embrace creative economy in Taita Taveta.

Before we discuss this reasons let us understand what is creative economy and made made up of what dimensions.

The creative economy further comprise of various knowledge-based economic activities involving tangible products and intangible intellectual assets, with economic and culture value, creative content and market objectives

These industries include advertising, architecture, arts and crafts, design, fashion, film, video, photography, music, performing arts, publishing, research and development, software, computer games, electronic publishing and TV/radio.

so reasons lest we discuss;

  1. Economic Empowerment

The creative economy enables artists to turn their passions and talents into sustainable career paths that can result in more enjoyable, vibrant lives. Promoting entrepreneurship and self-employment in the community gives creative workers more agency over how they want to earn an income, leading to increased job creation and economic growth.

   2. Community Development

As the economy begins to flourish, so does community development. Creativity can rebuild communities and make them more inclusive. The rise of exhibitions, museums, theaters, and music venues serves as a catalyst for attracting more tourists, therefore boosting the local economy and contributing toward the development of community, artistic expression, and entertainment for everyone who visits.

  3.Social Inclusion

Social inclusion is pivotal for creating a diverse and thriving community. It emphasizes the importance of ensuring that everyone has equal opportunities to engage, contribute, and benefit from the creative sector. By utilizing creativity as a platform for change, underserved communities can express themselves, tell their stories, advocate for social change, and challenge the status quo.

 4.Cultural Preservation

Let’s keep traditions and cultural values alive! What is art without the history and context behind how it came to life? Cultural preservation is key to creating diverse cultural expressions and a sense of pride and identity in a community. It also encourages communities to learn about different cultures and strengthens social bonds.

5. Innovation and Problem-Solving

In response to the pandemic, the shift to digital made society rethink and prioritize accessibility during the pandemic because the sector faced many challenges with in-person events. This is merely scratching the surface of a much deeper and broader impact. The creative economy holds tremendous potential to bring positive change to society, which is why it’s important to advocate for and invest in it, ensuring that we can all enjoy the benefits the creative economy offers.

The sixth reason is far-fetched because of the situation we have in this county.

  6.The wage-bill question

The burgeoning wage bill in Taita Taveta County, currently standing at 57% and poised to escalate to 60%, signifies a prevailing inclination towards traditional employment paradigms rather than fostering a culture of entrepreneurial innovation and risk-taking.

This trend underscores a pressing need to recalibrate the county's economic priorities towards sustainable development initiatives that transcend mere employment generation. Lamentably, the absence of dedicated policies and budgetary allocations aimed at nurturing the creative economy exacerbates this predicament, relegating the pursuit of creative ventures to a perilous endeavor unsuitable for the faint-hearted.

Nevertheless, amidst the fiscal strains imposed by burgeoning expenditure, there exists a beacon of hope in the form of the untapped potential of the creative economy within Taita Taveta County. With a promising success rate estimated at 85%, facilitated by the presence of influential stakeholders such as UNESCO and other supportive entities, the realization of this potential hinges upon a concerted effort to harness and monetize the rich cultural and tourism assets inherent to the region.

Therefore, while the challenges are formidable, the imperative to diversify revenue streams and foster an environment conducive to creative enterprise compels us to venture boldly into this realm, guided by a vision of sustainable prosperity for Taita Taveta County and its inhabitants.

Joseph Kennedy Mwalegha, MCA of Mwatate ward, emerged as a driving force behind the cleanup campaign, leveraging his position to advocate for systemic reforms within the county assembly. Through strategic alliances with self-help groups, CBOs, and community volunteers, he galvanized support for the cause, fostering a culture of environmental responsibility and civic engagement. As the cleanup initiative gains momentum, Joseph Kennedy Mwalegha remains resolute in his dedication to the task at hand. With each participant recognized and rewarded for their contributions, the message rings clear: "I love the environment, and I love it clean."

Thanks to Joseph Kennedy Mwalegha Foundation and Community Efforts

In a display of community spirit and environmental stewardship, the Joseph Kennedy Mwalegha Foundation, led by its director Joseph Kennedy Mwalegha, spearheaded a transformative initiative to clean up the heart of Mwatate town.

Situated as the bustling epicenter of Taita Taveta county, Mwatate CBD has long grappled with the scourge of indiscriminate garbage dumping, plaguing its streets and compromising the health and safety of its residents.

The situation had reached a tipping point, with the local business community seemingly indifferent to the environmental degradation unfolding before their eyes. The mounting heaps of refuse, particularly around the municipality market, had overwhelmed both county environmental authorities and the Taita Taveta county government.

Challenges ranging from inadequate funding for waste management to insufficient infrastructure for garbage collection and disposal underscored the urgent need for intervention. Compounding matters, the absence of proper drainage exacerbated the problem during the rainy season, transforming CBD roads into impassable, debris-strewn thoroughfares.

Hazardous materials such as sharp glass and rusty metals posed additional risks, threatening public health and safety. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, Joseph Kennedy Mwalegha and his team sprang into action, mobilizing community members and stakeholders for a concerted cleanup effort. Sensitization campaigns were launched to educate local businesses on responsible waste disposal practices, while county environmental staff redoubled their efforts to clear garbage receptacles, especially in critical areas like the Mwatate modern market and adjacent to Mwatate Posta, ahead of market days.

Moreover, proactive strategies were devised to address household waste management, emphasizing the importance of preventing the dumping of non-biodegradable waste near water bodies. Concerns over designated landfill sites, often used for the indiscriminate disposal of hazardous materials, prompted calls for their relocation and stricter adherence to waste disposal protocols.

Central to these efforts was the unwavering commitment of individuals like Joseph Mwashuma (Mshirafu), Fatuma Salim (Thumamy), Righa Mwachofi, and Idris Mohammed of SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT CBO, who tirelessly championed the cause of environmental conservation and community empowerment. Their collaborative endeavors, alongside the support of organizations such as Teita Estate, Hildana Lodge Teita, Qwetu Sacco, and Wildlife Clubs of Kenya-Taita Taveta Action Group, among others, epitomized the collective resolve to effect lasting change.

He (Jowie) lacks stable partner relationships. He has antisocial patterns manifested by living on the edge. He is impulsive and a thrill seeker. He uses anger or aggression to control others. Has a double personality trait.

The High Court is set to impose its sentence on Joseph Irungu, also known as Jowie, for the murder of businesswoman Monica Kimani. This comes after a series of legal proceedings and deliberations that saw Jowie convicted of the heinous crime, while his co-accused, Jacque Maribe, was exonerated of the murder charge.

The ruling, delivered by Judge Grace Nzioka, made 13 findings that implicated both Irungu and Maribe. However, while Maribe was acquitted of the murder charge, she was found guilty of lying to a public officer. Interestingly, Judge Nzioka pointed out that Maribe could not be convicted of this offense since she had not been charged with it originally, raising questions about the legal process and the charges brought against her.

Joseph Irungu alias Jowie has been sentenced to death after he was found guilty of the 2018 murder of businesswoman Monica Kimani.

Delivering the verdict on Wednesday, High Court judge Grace Nzioka ruled that the horrific murder of Monica Kimani was "intentional."

"It was not a defensive act. It was not out of provocation. It was planned, intended and executed," ruled Justice Nzioka.

The case garnered significant attention due to the gruesome nature of Monica Kimani's murder. The judge emphasized that the injuries sustained by Monica indicated meticulous planning, with her neck being slit in a manner akin to slaughtering a goat. Such details underscore the brutality of the crime and the need for justice to be served.

Throughout the trial, the prosecution failed to place Maribe at the scene of the crime, leading to her acquittal. Judge Nzioka highlighted the lack of sufficient evidence to incriminate Maribe and questioned the appropriateness of the charges brought against her. This decision has sparked discussions about the effectiveness of the legal system and the importance of ensuring fair and just proceedings.

As Jowie awaits sentencing, the revocation of his bond terms and his subsequent custody pending sentencing underscore the gravity of the situation. The court's decision will not only bring closure to the case but also serve as a reminder of the consequences of such heinous acts.

The impending sentencing of Jowie Irungu for Monica Kimani's murder marks a pivotal moment in the legal proceedings surrounding this tragic case. While Maribe has been exonerated, the pursuit of justice continues as the court deliberates on the appropriate punishment for the convicted defendant.

By urging residents to serve as mere brokers of construction materials rather than actively participating in the construction process through locally established companies, the MP's actions appear to contradict his earlier commitments to promote local empowerment and inclusion in development initiatives. This discrepancy has left residents questioning the sincerity and integrity of the MP.

To uplift the economic status of Mwatate constituents, the Member of Parliament for Mwatate,Peter Shake made bold promises during his campaign. He pledged to form companies for locals, particularly targeting people living with disabilities, women, and youth, to enable their participation in the tendering process. However, almost two years since his election, these promises remain unfulfilled, leaving many wondering, "What went wrong?"

One of the key promises was the formation of companies within six months of the MP's election. These companies were meant to facilitate equity in the procurement of tenders in Mwatate constituency. Sadly, there has been no sign of progress on this front, leaving many constituents disillusioned.

Recently, in Mwatunge, Modambogho sub-location, Mwatate ward, the national government offered to build a market to boost the local economy. The tender for this project was awarded to FEPP General Contractors Limited , raising eyebrows among the locals. They are puzzled as to how the tender was awarded to this particular company, with many feeling left out of the process.

The dissonance between the MP's earlier commitments and his current encouragement for residents to engage solely as brokers raises significant questions about the discrepancy between promises made and actions taken.

The ownership of the project has sparked a dispute between the area MCA, Joseph Kennedy Mwalegha, and the MP. The MCA was handed over the project by the technical team from Nairobi, as the MP was reportedly unaware of its existence until notified by his groundmen.

The manner in which the tender was awarded and the lack of transparency in the process have exacerbated the situation. Locals are now relegated to providing cheap labor, with no substantial benefits accruing to them. There are also concerns about the display of the contract signboard, which fails to provide details about the tender amount, further adding to the lack of transparency.

The residents feel neglected and taken advantage of by their elected leaders, who seem more interested in personal gain than in fulfilling their promises to the community. The need for accountability and transparency in tender processes is paramount to avoid such controversies in the future.

It is imperative for the MP to address the discrepancies between his promises and actions, and to provide clarity and accountability to the constituents. Residents deserve transparency and honesty from their elected representatives, as well as genuine efforts to promote local empowerment and economic development.

Elected leaders must prioritize the needs of their constituents and ensure that promises made during campaigns are fulfilled for the betterment of the community.

After a Flood – Ensuring Safety and Recovery; Flooding can be a devastating natural disaster, wreaking havoc on homes and communities. In the aftermath of a flood, it is crucial to prioritize safety and take systematic steps toward recovery. Here's a comprehensive guide on what to do after a flood and how to protect yourself and your property.

 Here are #8thingstodoafterfloods.

  1. Safety First: The foremost priority is safety. Do not return to flooded areas until authorities declare it safe to do so. Your presence may interfere with emergency response operations. Follow recommended routes, avoid sightseeing, and watch for hazards like washed-out roads and downed power lines.
  2. Building Inspection: Before entering a flooded building, ensure it is safe. Do not enter if it is still surrounded by floodwater. Check for structural damage, inspect foundations, and wait for local building officials to declare it safe before entering.
  3.  Caution Inside Buildings: Exercise extreme caution when inside buildings. Wear sturdy shoes to prevent injuries, use battery-powered lighting in case of flammable materials, and watch for fire hazards. Report broken utility lines and check for electrical system damage.
  4.  Documenting the Damage: Take pictures of the damage, both to the building and its contents, for insurance claims. This documentation is crucial for a smoother claims process.
  5. Seeking Professional Help: Seek necessary medical care, address minor wounds, and don't neglect your health. Reach out to organizations like WHO, Red Cross, or local authorities for assistance with food, clothing, shelter, and first aid. Have an electrician check the electrical system and appliances, and ensure well water is tested before consumption.

6. Making Your Home Safe: Dispose of medicines, food, or water that had contact with floodwaters, including canned goods. Boil drinking water if its purity is questionable. Keep children away from flooded areas, ventilate your home, pump out flooded basements gradually, and keep the power off until an electrician inspects the system.

7. Cleaning and Disinfecting: Clean and disinfect everything that got wet, including damaged sewage systems. This step is crucial for preventing the growth of mold and ensuring a healthy living environment.

8. Future Flood Prevention: When making repairs, follow local building codes and use flood-resistant materials and techniques. Elevate electrical components and utilities above potential flood heights, and consider elevating the entire structure. Install a backflow valve in the sewer system for added protection.

Schools like Kitivo Primary School, with a significant student population, lack basic infrastructure such as fencing, leaving them vulnerable to land disputes and security concerns. Similar challenges are faced by Mailikumi Primary School, Mwatunge Primary School, Godoma Primary School, and Kighononyi Primary School, exacerbating tensions between the schools and their surrounding communities.

The acquisition of a school bus for Mwatate Secondary School has sparked controversy and raised questions about the allocation of resources by Hon. Peter Shake, the Member of Parliament. While the gesture is commendable, concerns have been raised regarding the true priorities of the community and the urgent needs that remain unaddressed.

One cannot overlook the pressing issues facing primary education in the constituency.

Furthermore, the lack of adequate desks in rural schools highlights the dire need for essential resources to create a conducive learning environment for students. Additionally, the absence of a library in Mwatate Subcounty deprives underprivileged pupils and students of a vital resource for academic advancement and self-improvement.

Hon. Shake's initiation of a food program, while beneficial, faces financial constraints that limit its sustainability. Moreover, over 230 students from Mwatate Subcounty lack the necessary school fees to pursue secondary education, indicating a deeper systemic issue that requires immediate attention.

The intended purpose of the bus was to serve both the sports fraternity and the wider community, acting as an asset for talent development and community welfare programs. However, miscommunication or oversight may have led to its allocation solely to Mwatate Secondary School, missing the opportunity for broader community benefit and utilization.

It is imperative for leaders and decision-makers to prioritize the fundamental needs of the community over symbolic gestures. The role of the Member of Parliament and the NGCDF committee is to serve the best interests of the constituents, addressing their most pressing concerns effectively and responsibly.

It is crucial for the management of Hon. Shake's office to critically assess the allocation of resources and provide informed advice to the leadership. However, two critical obstacles hinder effective counsel: reluctance due to age or a lack of a sense of ownership towards leadership. Addressing these impediments is essential to fostering effective governance and ensuring the welfare of the community.

The acquisition of a school bus, while beneficial, should not overshadow the urgent needs of education and infrastructure in Mwatate Constituency. Responsible allocation of resources, informed decision-making, and genuine commitment to serving the community are paramount to addressing the challenges and achieving meaningful progress.

....................................Recruitment of youth to Kenya Defense Forces, To continue feeding program in schools after being elected To make sure that the parks around Taita Taveta are giving CSR to the community by raising the percentage and if not possible he will mobile the local community to demonstrate for the benefit of them. ...................................can he come that clean and remain a good Canon? He may be a very big elephant in the room by launching projects that are not funded with funds from NGCDF it is okay. Maybe citizens will use razor blades to slay it out. Maybe he took a very high and accidentally fell or fell, we can only do two things, be quiet and hear the falling thud he will drop with, or Prepare our feeble joined hands to receive him before he hits the ground. With concern there are individuals who won’t agree with this concept It is okay you don’t have to agree with either, just wait for the above two things to keep. If Governor Mwadime continues to play hide and seek, it will look ugly and harsher than Kishushe dry lands in sunny seasons.

Leaders listen even a female Kangaroo listens, despite being in hurry to jump around...

14 months now down the line and leaders in Taita Taveta generally can’t show citizens anything to smile about. The governor of Taita Taveta County has been notably playing the escape game for reasons He may need time to find donors or investors to boost own source revenue for the county. Politics continue to heat up but for some reason, netizens think Mwadime the Governor is very slow and feeble not to even answer criticism.

If the criticism was constructive not infuriated by political alignments and suspected of powerful people playing from dark curtains then perhaps The governor could come out and answer the criticism to Narrow down the line and avoid the blame game. Proper implementation and development are being witnessed from Taveta and Wundanyi, which is Hon.Bwire and Hon.Mwashako.

Hon. Canon Peter Shake I guess he should be canonical and noble to achieve his agenda as the Mp Mwatate constituency, in his campaigns he dearly promised to make Mwatate a very new heaven by dusting the legacy if there that the former MP now the governor could have left behind, during his tenure.

These were Hon. Canon Peter Shake promises during campaigns,

  1. Recruitment of youth to Kenya Defense Forces,
  2. To continue feeding program in schools after being elected
  3. To make sure that the parks around Taita Taveta are giving CSR to the community by raising the percentage and if not possible he will mobile the local community to demonstrate for the benefit of them.
  4. To form village companies so as to make it fair in the tenderpreneurship process in NGCDF
  5. He promised to act on this quickly in his first days in office
  6. He promised to attend to the issue of gemstones and minerals which he could have vaguely achieved, let us do a half smile for that.

HON. SHAKE he is a good guy, he recently paid pending bills to all of the monies of that financial year, was that a development under the agenda he previously sang?

HE IS A VERY SOFT-SPOKEN person and a humble character maybe this is why he is failing to accomplish what he promised, or he is lacking support from the surrounding clique. But no, he is the elected leader.

Then if so can he publish the names of the companies that were paid pending bills and for which projects and to what amount each project, can he come that clean and remain a good Canon?

The question is how do you afford to eat sleep, wake up, walk to the bank, and withdraw money that has been paid to you as a leader through tax that citizens contribute, Taita Taveta belongs to everyone let us build it. No one is dirty or clean only if you think you are or if this gets you bitter and furious. See how Taita Taveta citizens are languishing in poverty while we are busy giving political alignments, just see.

See how Mwatate Sub County, the richest of all, not even a youth or a mother can survive a funeral without contributions.

Such a disparity.

See how leaders are escaping citizens by playing and keeping the thought that they need handouts.

Anyway, Citizens would really like to get answers from Hon. Peter Mbogho Shake - MP Mwatate as to why we are witnessing the unfortunate collapse of MTTI at Kirughurunyi just 8 years after completion. It will be prudent to get answers from you not only as the area MP but also as the Contractor who was awarded that job for a whooping Kes 53.9 million yet to get very substandard work done, not even ramps were done, no gutters were done, (you just did recently with fresh funding by you as the MP), at this century!

It is open that in the proposal of the financial year 2022-23, Elijah Mzae secondary school in Wusi Kishamba ward had an approved allocation of Kes 6 million for the construction of a science laboratory for 50 capacity sitting students.

However, as we talk now Elijah Mzae Secondary School has not received the allocation because the funds were re-allocated to do repairs to the crumbling Mwatate Technical Training Institute (MTTI) which you constructed at a whooping 53.9 million in the year 2016 ( 8 years ago).

I am sure Hezron Mwashighadi the now coordinator of the MP office, Hon Shake can start seeing the gaps please don’t fill the gaps with sand, inform your boss, again don’t get sad inform your boss, things are getting messy, he is very brilliant, eavesdrop might be the incoming MCA that ward, no threat.

Let us plant more trees but in schools, the survival rate will be high, again, let us remember we have initiatives like Mwatate CBO and others, and they could be funded for the same.

Is MTTI an emergency, and what has warranted it to be an emergency project?

Is it the crumbling state of MTTI due to an unforeseen occurrence or is it due to the shoddy work that you did as the contractor?

Months of waiting turned into a test of patience for the people of Mwatate, who initially believed they had chosen the right MP to bring about positive change. The question that lingers is, who is responsible for this imbalance? Is it the advice he receives from his surrounding advisors, or is it a problem inherent to HON SHAKE himself? Let's delve into this issue through a political lens. One resident from Soko Ya Zamani, a constituent of Mwatate, feels she has been taken advantage of. The responsibility now falls on HON SHAKE to clarify the truth behind the promise of constructing houses under the housing program. Is it a genuine commitment to improving the lives of constituents, or is it merely a public relations strategy?

Mwatate Constituents had high hopes when they elected their Member of Parliament, HON SHAKE. The housing program initiated under the Shake Foundation seemed like a beacon of hope for many in the constituency. However, as time passed, constituents began to feel deceived by empty promises surrounding the program, leading to a growing sense of frustration and disappointment.

HON SHAKE pledged to construct three houses per ward in the five wards of Mwatate constituency. However, the real concern lies in how the quality of these houses will be assured to provide security and sustainability for the residents. Additionally, the public demands transparency in the expenditure report of the Shake Foundation regarding the housing program. Who are the other sponsors or contributors to this program, if any, or is it solely the initiative of HON SHAKE himself?

Collaboration and community involvement are crucial. How can the community partner with the SHAKE FOUNDATION to support such programs? These are questions that need answers. The constituents, who were once optimistic about the housing program, now deserve to know the full truth.

It's time to shift the focus from being a one-man show to a community-driven initiative. As the constituents of Mwatate continue to wait for the promises to be fulfilled, they must also demand accountability and transparency from their Member of Parliament.

H.E Andrew Mwadime, though, is a master of the message, one of the most charismatic leaders in Taita Taveta County, and since he “gets it” he’s dressing correctly, instead of meeting your expectations. There are a lot of different types of people who wear suits and ties. For others, think of powerful businesspeople or politicians. I also think of more traditional professions like lawyers or doctors. Whoever is wearing a suit and tie, I think they look professional and put-together.
