ADDRESSING SOCIAL CHALLENGES THROUGH CREATIVE ECONOMY

This significant occasion was graced by notable groups such as the Taita Upcoming Talents from Wundanyi, friends from Taveta, Talia Focus from Werugha and Mghange, Mulika Theatre Group from Josa, Voi filmmakers like Wiremesh Mrume, Constance Mwakisha, Yvonne, Spill Motion Group, and Bingwa Arts from Bura Mission. 

Most prominently, the Taita Daily Filmmakers Network played a key role in bringing together a vibrant local turnout that underscored the dialogue on embracing the creative economy to tackle pressing social challenges.

The event also featured electrifying performances by renowned music artists such as Chris Mwaluficho, Lenny Africa,  YoungeLee ,Almas Dancers, Shalo B, and Tamara. 

Taita Taveta County faces numerous social challenges, including unemployment, drug and substance abuse, and rising crime rates. These issues often lead to youth incarceration at an early age. The launch of "Leila" provided a platform to discuss how the creative economy can offer a safe space for the youth and the broader community to express and grow their ambitions inclusively.

Governor Andrew Mwadime, who attended the event, emphasized the county's commitment through the Department of Youth, Gender, and Culture to support the creative industry. The Governor highlighted the potential of the creative economy to address and mitigate social issues by providing productive and engaging opportunities for the youth.

The event also saw the Coast Filmmakers awarding the best in various categories, celebrating and motivating local talent. This recognition not only boosts morale but also fosters a culture of creativity and innovation within the community. The Kenya Film Commission, a state department for films, also attended the launch and reiterated its support for the ongoing dialogue on using the creative economy to solve social challenges. 

The "Leila" film launch served as a powerful reminder of the transformative potential of the creative economy. By fostering an environment where artistic talents can flourish, the community can effectively address social issues and provide meaningful opportunities for the youth. The collective efforts of filmmakers, musicians, and other creative professionals, supported by government initiatives, underscore the critical role of the creative economy in driving positive social change in Taita Taveta County.
