Taita Taveta County in Kenya boasts an array of captivating destinations well worth exploring, offering a delightful escape from the demands of everyday life. Among its many alluring sites are Lake Jipe, a small shallow lake straddling the Kenya-Tanzania border, known for its unique water birds, endemic fish, and scenic wetlands.

LAKE JIPE


Lake Jipe is a small shallow, lying astride to Kenya- Tanzania border. It covers an area of approximately 30 square kilometers. The lake is mainly fed by Lumi River and streams from the Pare Mountains in Tanzania. The Lake is known for its unique water birds and other species of birds, endemic fish, lake edge swamps and wetland plants.


LUGARD FALLS


The falls are a must see when visiting Tsavo East national park. The falls features eye catching multicolored rocks with pink, light grey and white strips. It is a habitat of giant crocodiles and hippos. The fall was named after Fredrick Lugard, a British explorer who passed through the Lugard Falls on his way to Uganda.


LAKE CHALLA


Lake Chala in Taita Taveta
It is a crater lake that is located north of Taveta. Lake Chala is located between the border of Kenya and Tanzania. One of the lake’s shores is found in Kenya while others are in Tanzania. The Lake features a beautiful landscape with diverse species of birds. Monitor lizards, baboons and Vervet monkeys can also be spotted within the lake’s vicinity.


TSAVO WEST NATIONAL PARK 


It is a beautiful park with a savannah ecosystem. The ecosystem comprises of open grasslands, scrublands, acacia woodlands, belts of riverine vegetation and rocky ridges. Some of the attractions at the park include different birds and plant species, elephants, hippos, rhino, leopards, buffalos, cheetahs and lions. It is an ideal park for cave exploration, game viewing, nature trails and camping.


TAITA TAVETA HILLS WILDLIFE SANCTUARY 


It is a privately owned sanctuary that was established by the Hilton Hotel Chain. Taita Hills wildlife sanctuary features different species of Birds, Elephants, Lions, Cheetahs, Giraffes, Gazelles, Zebras, Impalas, Waterbucks, Dik-dik and various small animals. The sanctuary provides a relaxing environment for game viewing activities, bird watching, camping and nature walks. Two luxury lodges, the Sarova Salt Lick Game Lodge and Sarova Taita Hills Game Lodge are located in the sanctuary. The lodges offer accommodation for visitors who would want to spend a holiday or weekend over there.


SHETANI LAVA FLOW


Shetani Lava Flow, found on the road to Amboseli, showcases one of Kenya's largest volcanic crater fields. The striking black lava flow, formed about a century ago, features captivating flora, fauna, and intriguing caves to explore. The name "Shetani," meaning devil in Swahili, adds to its allure and attracts curious visitors to witness the volcanic wonder.

MZIMA SPRINGS

Mzima Springs in Tsavo West National Park, with its four natural springs, offers a chance to observe hippos and Nile crocodiles. The springs' abundant water supply sustains diverse animal species in the surrounding savannah, making it a favored spot for wildlife enthusiasts and bird watchers.


Tsavo East National Park, near Voi town, is home to the renowned Big Five animals – Lions, Leopards, Elephants, Buffalos, and Rhinos. The park also houses hippos, crocodiles, waterbucks, and over 200 bird species, making it a perfect destination for camping, bird watching, game viewing, and nature walks.
